In the essay “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift, the
author uses satire to capture the audience’s attention in order to prevent what
Swift sees as a burden. His idea is that the children of Ireland that are being
born into poor families can become beneficial to the country. There are many
different ways that people can view Swifts essay, either take his sarcasm
literally or see it as trying to get a message out to the public. I believe
that Swift uses satire in this essay to capture the attention of people and
prove a point.
