According to “Good Readers and Good Writers,” Nabokov says
that in order to be a good reader, one must pay attention to detail, also try
to look into the time period of the novel as well, to understand why the author
is writing the piece. Another major thing he points out is not to have
pre-assembled ideas about the book because of its title or what the back of the
book says it’s about and usually that is what I do, but with this novel I will
keep an open mind. Also, he points out that re-reading may be necessary as
well. I agree with his thoughts of being a good reader and respecting the
author and the book. My favorite point that he brought up was not to judge the
book by its cover, and to stick with a book, because I tend to loose interest.
Personally, I think good characteristics a good reader
should have is, patience to stick with a book and finish it. Also to be able to
completely focus on the reading, and not to let the mind wonder, so you aren’t
simply reading and not retaining any information. Honestly, I don’t think that I am a good
reader because I have a problem of
re-reading lines over and over without retaining anything I just read. I also
get bored of a story line and will stop reading as well, hopefully that changes
with this novel.
